Description
The AB-04 Split-Seconds Chronograph represents Qian GuoBiao’s bold exploration of duality in horology — the tension and harmony between separation and reunion. Building on the thematic foundation of his earlier works, such as the Double Balance Wheel (which celebrated synchronised precision through twin oscillators), the AB-04 turns to the rattrapante mechanism as a poetic expression of independence and convergence. The two chronograph seconds hands operate independently yet reunite seamlessly, symbolising the dynamic interplay of time’s measurable fragments and its inevitable unity — a reflection of the independent watchmaker’s journey in blending tradition with personal innovation.
Visually striking and mechanically transparent, the AB-04 features a 40mm stainless steel case (14.5mm thick, 47.5mm lug-to-lug) with a distinctive deep purple brass dial. The hours/minutes subdial and 30-minute counter are thoughtfully repositioned at 12 o’clock, opening the lower half of the dial to reveal the intricate split-seconds (rattrapante) clutch mechanism in action. This dial-side exposure allows the wearer to witness live the “separation and reunion” of the central chronograph hands above the visible pliers-style clutch — a rare and captivating demonstration of the complication’s core function. Pale yellow accents on the subdial and minute track provide excellent contrast and legibility, while inverted pump pushers evoke classic chronograph heritage.
At the heart of the watch beats the in-house modified calibre AB-04, based on a robust ETA 7750 architecture but extensively re-engineered by Qian GuoBiao and his atelier. Key modifications include a newly developed rattrapante clutch and bridge structure, along with a redesigned mainplate to accommodate the shifted dial layout. The automatic movement runs at 28,800 vph with a 42-hour power reserve, delivering hours, minutes, and full split-seconds chronograph functionality with 25 jewels. Every piece is assembled, finished, and rigorously tested in the atelier.
Limited to just 5 pieces and presented on a custom calf leather strap by JeaYou, the AB-04 embodies Qian GuoBiao’s uncompromising vision: technical ambition rooted in Chinese independent watchmaking, executed with restraint, clarity, and mechanical poetry. It stands as a confident statement from one of China’s rising independent voices, inviting Academy members and enthusiasts to experience the living mechanics of time itself
