Description
With the Brunswick 40 ‘1846 Edition’, Fears honours its roots in the English city of Bristol 180 years ago, and it does so with one of its most considered and elegant watches to date.
A remarkably faithful adaptation of the very first pocket watch created by founder Edwin Fear, there are no concessions to modernity in the dial design, with heat-blued spade-shaped steel hands, a glossy lacquered dial with recessed small seconds and authentic period lettering for the dial text. The Roman numerals and minute track are a faithful recreation of the original, harking back to the height of the industrial revolution.
The watch is cased in 925 sterling silver, an unusual choice that pays tribute to Fears’ earliest wristwatches from the 1910s and 1920s that has also become a modern tradition for limited editions launched at British Watchmaking Day. The metal is paired with a pig’s leather strap, something also found on those first wristwatches; lined with Alcantara, it is durable, soft and flexible while adding more personality than traditional alternatives.
Naturally the movement is entirely contemporary - a La Joux-Perret G121M - but even so, it was chosen because the architecture allows a more historically satisfying placement of the small seconds subdial, as well as hand-winding.
