FRENCH WATCHMAKING IN THE SERVICE OF HIGH MOUNTAINS

Born in the heart of the French Alps in the 1950s, the Chamonix was always conceived as a watch for action. With the Chamonix Type Militaire GMHM, Elgé continues this philosophy alongside the Groupe Militaire de Haute Montagne (GMHM - https://www.gmhm.fr/), the elite French Army unit specialized in operations in alpine environments.

Developed from the contemporary Chamonix, this special edition benefits from the feedback and experience of users operating in some of the most demanding mountain conditions. More than a collaboration, it represents the meeting of two worlds that share the same values: commitment, endurance, self-reliance, and a focus on essentials.

The 316L stainless steel case retains the balanced proportions that define the collection: a 38 mm diameter, 11.6 mm thickness, a 7 mm screw-down crown, and 150 meters of water resistance. For this Type Militaire version, the case adopts a fully brushed finish, prioritizing functionality, discretion, and reduced reflections. Compact, robust, and versatile, the Chamonix Type Militaire GMHM was designed to accompany its wearer in the most demanding environments.

The matte black dial follows a distinctly functional approach. Large 12, 3, 6, and 9 numerals provide immediate legibility, while a concentric 24-hour military scale adds an additional layer of information. A deliberately simplified minute track further enhances clarity. Elgé’s signature Magnum hands also receive a brushed finish, directly inspired by feedback from GMHM members to minimize unwanted reflections. A new interpretation of the Chamonix seconds hand, the central seconds adopts a counterweight-free construction — a historical signature of the model — combined with a luminous red-tipped arrow. A functional design conceived to maximize readability while reinforcing the unique identity of this military edition.

At the heart of the watch beats the France Ébauche FE Auto – No Date movement, manufactured in Maîche, France. Based on the FE 5601/5611 architecture and modernized with the support of Soprod and the Festina Group, it offers a 44-hour power reserve, a 28,800 vph (4 Hz) frequency, Incabloc® double-cone shock protection, and a cross-through balance bridge for enhanced robustness and stability. A French movement perfectly aligned with the identity of this edition.

The GMHM emblem is discreetly positioned at 6 o’clock on the dial, while the decagonal caseback features an exclusive engraving combining the GMHM and Chamonix insignias. The watch is delivered with a black leather strap fitted with a bund pad, as well as a blue one-piece nylon strap, offering two complementary expressions of the same spirit of adventure.

More than a special edition, the Chamonix Type Militaire GMHM embodies the meeting of a French watchmaking heritage and those who live and operate in the mountains every day. Born in the Alps and developed with those who traverse them, it perpetuates a certain vision of the tool watch: discreet, reliable, and ready for action.
