Description
The Bühlmann Decompression 02 is not an aesthetic interpretation of a traditonal dive watch. It's the first Swiss dive watch rooted in decompression science.
Developed in collaboration with DAN Europe and tested with CMAS Switzerland, the Decompression 02 transforms one of the most important contributions to modern diving safety, the ZH-L Bühlmann decompression model, into a mechanical instrument designed to accompany divers both underwater and in everyday life.
The watch pays tribute to the work of Swiss physician and scientist Dr. Albert A. Bühlmann, whose decompression research became a worldwide reference for dive planning and remains at the foundation of modern dive computers today.
Rather than competing with digital instruments, the Decompression 02 translates this scientific heritage into mechanical watchmaking, restoring tangibility, beauty, and emotional connection to an era increasingly dominated by screens. It is both a luxury watch as well as an effective back-up safety instrument for divers, as attested by DAN Europe.
Its most distinctive features are a twin safety bezel, one for decompression timing and the other for total dive time measurement, each with a different failsafe direction. The decompression timing related to one of the 17 recreational (max 40m) dive profiles managed by the watch is displayed on the turning bottom dial. In the 18th bottom dial segment, the watch also integrates a mechanical “fly / no-fly” indicator inspired by decompression safety procedures used after diving by means of a modified date disk.
Beyond its functional ingenuity, the Decompression 02 introduces a completely recognizable design language built around purpose: three crowns at 12 o'clock, a distinctive 5° inclined "container" stainlees steel case, a concave caseback developed to improve wearability over extended period and an articulated strap with a flexible joint designed to adapt naturally to the wrist.
At its core beats the ultra-thin Swiss automatic SW300 movement, chosen for its slimness, reliability and robustness, reinforcing the philosophy that true tool watches should remain wearable in everyday life, not only in extreme environments.
More broadly, the Decompression 02 represents a new approach to contemporary horology: watches not merely inspired by adventure, but rooted in real scientific, operational, and human stories. It is both a tribute to Swiss innovation and a statement that mechanical watchmaking can still create meaningful instruments in the modern world.
