Description
The DWC Terra is not a traditional tool watch. Its design began with a simple question: if tool watches are inspired by utility, why are they rarely inspired by the tools themselves?
The answer led us to one of the most ubiquitous yet overlooked objects in the world of outdoor equipment: the carabiner. Rather than borrowing visual cues from mountaineering watches, the Terra draws directly from the geometry, structural logic and functional simplicity of the carabiner itself. The result is a case architecture that departs entirely from conventional round watchmaking while remaining practical, ergonomic and instantly recognizable.
Created to commemorate the fifth anniversary of Delhi Watch Company, the Terra was also conceived as a manufacturing challenge. As a Microbrand from India, we set out to produce a titanium case that could remain faithful to the design while being manufactured at a scale rarely attempted by a microbrand. A total of 5,555 watches were produced.
The unconventional case geometry demanded an unconventional manufacturing approach. Rather than relying solely on traditional CNC machining, the two-dimensional titanium profile is first cut from sheet stock using a combination of water-jet cutting and wire EDM machining, allowing dimensional tolerances of approximately ±20 microns to be achieved efficiently. The case then undergoes a series of conventional machining and finishing operations to create the final three-dimensional form.
This integration of design and production was fundamental to the Terra. The manufacturing process was not adapted to suit the design; the design was developed alongside the manufacturing process. The resulting case architecture reduces machining complexity, minimizes material waste and enables a distinctive titanium form that would have been difficult to realize through conventional case-making methods alone.
The Terra represents our belief that innovation in watchmaking can emerge not only from complications or materials, but also from rethinking the relationship between design, manufacturing and utility. Inspired by a humble tool used around the world, it is a watch that embraces functional design and industrial rawness.
