Description

The CITIZEN is a distinguished collection of timepieces defined by refined quality and practicality, embodying Citizen’s craftsmanship while pursuing the very essence of watchmaking through exceptional standards of accuracy, quality, and design. Within the collection are models equipped with the mechanical movement Calibre 0200/0210, featuring a free-sprung balance and achieving an accuracy of −3 to +5 seconds per day, surpassing chronometer standards (ISO 3159). It also includes the world’s most precise light-powered watch, with an annual accuracy of ±1 second, alongside models featuring dials crafted from traditional Japanese paper with an annual accuracy of ±5 seconds—demonstrating Citizen’s breadth as a pioneer of light-powered technology.

The AQ4091-56W, equipped with a high-accuracy Eco-Drive movement offering an annual accuracy of ±5 seconds, is a limited-edition model commemorating the 50th anniversary of Citizen’s introduction of the world’s first analogue light-powered watch (now known as Eco-Drive) in 1976.

The dial is crafted from washi paper. Long used in shōji screens and paper lanterns as a material that transmits light, washi softly receives and diffuses illumination. This quality renders it particularly well suited to Eco-Drive dials, achieving a quiet harmony between functionality and beauty. Its distinctive texture furthermore offers a refined expression of traditional Japanese aesthetic sensibilities.

For this commemorative model, inspiration is drawn from the enduring green of pine needles—unchanged even with the passage of time—imbued with the meaning of Chitose Midori, a symbol of permanence.

With the aspiration of creating a timepiece that accompanies life’s moments with quiet constancy, this concept is realised in a dial of Tosa washi, meticulously dyed to embody that vision.

The washi dial is created through a fusion of natural colours long cherished in daily life, blending dyes derived from ibuki kariyasu grass—traditionally valued for its soft yellow—and indigo. Through the artisans’ skilled hand-dyeing, employing traditional techniques, these hues are transformed into a serene green. As though breathing with light, the dial reveals subtle variations in expression according to the angle from which it is viewed.

The delicate, organic texture unique to washi—gently transmitting light—together with its individuality, whereby no two expressions are ever identical, imparts a quiet warmth and depth with each passing moment. Transcending the bounds of a mere industrial product, it embodies a rich expression imbued with Japan’s traditions and aesthetic philosophy.

What unfolds upon the wrist is a small universe in which function, beauty, and culture coexist in tranquil harmony.
