Description
Jacob & Co. sets a new world record with God of Time, the fastest tourbillon ever made. Its carriage completes one rotation every 4 seconds, 15 times the speed of a classic one-minute tourbillon, with a power reserve of over 60 hours.
The JCAM60 is an entirely new calibre developed specifically for this speed. Because a tourbillon’s energy requirements increase exponentially with rotational velocity, the carriage was engineered to be as light as possible. Measuring 12 mm in diameter and weighing only 0.27 grams, it is constructed primarily from titanium. The energy required to sustain such speed would normally overwhelm the escapement. To regulate its delivery, Jacob & Co. integrated a constant-force mechanism directly within the tourbillon carriage, positioned one wheel before the escape wheel. Operating at 3 Hz, it releases a precisely metered impulse six times per second, isolating the regulating organ from fluctuations in the mainspring’s torque. The regulating organ itself follows traditional watchmaking principles, comprising a variable-inertia balance fitted with eight gold timing weights and a Breguet overcoil.
Energy is supplied by two pairs of stacked barrels, wound via the caseback. A sapphire bridge leaves the tourbillon fully exposed, emphasizing the visual impact of its unprecedented rotational speed.
The 44.5 mm rose gold case is inspired by the Ionic column, with a fluted caseband and two volutes at the top. On a dial of blue aventurine, a hand-crafted 3D appliqué of Chronos, the Greek god of time, is engraved and finished in rose gold. He holds the spinning tourbillon in his hand, time itself turning at his command.
Limited to 60 pieces, in celebration of founder Jacob Arabo's 60th birthday.
Supplied by the brand to the GPHG for its entry.
