Description
In the heart of the Shinshu region of central Japan, the majestic Tateshina Waterfall flows in a primeval forest, its presence embodying the eternal rhythm of nature. Inspired by this sylvan scene, the latest Spring Drive creation from Grand Seiko’s Masterpiece Collection expresses time not as an abstraction, but as a natural, continuous flow.
Brought to life through exquisite hand engraving
A limited edition of 50, each example features a dial that is individually hand-engraved, bringing each surface to life through exceptional craftsmanship. Lines radiate and intersect in multiple directions to evoke the dynamic movement of water as it springs from the earth and cascades over rocks. Translating this flowing expression – from its emergence to its descent - from dial to case required a careful reconciliation between the designer’s vision and the engraver’s hand, ensuring that the motif retained both continuity and vitality without becoming repetitive.
Beautifully finished and expertly engineered
At the heart of this watch lies the manual-winding Spring Drive Caliber 9R02, designed, finished, and assembled by the elite craftsmen and women of the Micro Artist Studio, located in Seiko Epson’s facility in Shiojiri, Nagano Prefecture. Measuring just 4.0mm thick – the thinnest of any Spring Drive movement – Caliber 9R02 achieves its remarkably slim profile while providing a power reserve of 84 hours. This is achieved through the Dual Spring Barrel and a unique mechanism known as the Torque Return System. The movement’s bridges are hand-finished to an exceptionally high standard, with mirror-polished edges and finely textured surfaces creating a striking contrast. Every detail, visible or not, reflects the same pursuit of precision and beauty that defines the exterior of the watch.
Inspired by an iconic Grand Seiko design
The movement is housed in a Platinum 950 case inspired by the iconic 44GS design. Its slim, 9.6mm profile is brought to life through engraved patterns that interact with Zaratsu-polished planes, revealing an ever-changing interplay of light and shadow. The smooth, silent glide of the Spring Drive seconds hand further mirrors the uninterrupted flow of time in nature.
Every element of this creation reflects the philosophy of the Masterpiece Collection: that true simplicity demands the highest level of mastery. Rather than merely displaying the time, this watch embodies it—through nature, craftsmanship, and the enduring beauty of precision.
