Description

The Perpetual Moon 38 Red Gold “Year of the Horse” follows in the wake of the artistic creations through which Arnold & Son explores the finest decorative arts. To celebrate the power and nobility of the horse, Arnold & Son unveils a limited edition of eight timepieces housed in a 38 mm red gold case. While this noble animal stands watch at all times, it is at night that it reveals its most fiery, mysterious and incandescent character.

Atop a hill, a horse rears up, its sovereign silhouette outlined against a star-filled sky and surrounded by sparks of a metaphorical fire. Here, Arnold & Son offers a free and poetic interpretation of this majestic animal. For this new creation, the Manufacture has called upon the very best of its artistic crafts. Miniature painting, three-dimensional engraving, hard-stone craftsmanship, and the fine watchmaking finishes of a movement featuring a large astronomical moon combine in the Perpetual Moon 38 Red Gold “Year of the Horse”, telling a story of excellence, symbolism and vital energy.

A Fiery Creation

Behind the expressive power of the scene lies the full creativity and expertise of Arnold & Son. The horse, crafted as an 18-carat red gold applique, is engraved entirely by hand. From its hooves to its flowing mane, every muscle seems alive with tension. The black aventurine sky sparkles like a deep firmament, where distant stars mingle with mountain landscapes and twilight woodlands, all painted by hand.

In the horse’s wake, hand-painted golden dust evokes a trail of sparks igniting one after another as the animal passes. These glowing embers symbolise its inner fire and untamed spirit. Touches of red and yellow Super-LumiNova, emitting the same nocturnal hues, transform the scene as darkness falls. Beneath the large moon crafted from luminous mother-of-pearl, the horse’s silhouette emerges with majesty, while the embers glow with renewed intensity. Nearby, the constellations Cassiopeia and Ursa Major take shape on the lunar disc, completing a dial that offers two distinct faces and two readings.

Noble Pedigree

On the reverse side, a secondary moon-phase indicator allows for quick and precise adjustment of the lunar age. The hand-wound A&S1612 calibre, beating at the heart of the Perpetual Moon 38 Red Gold “Year of the Horse”, tracks the lunar cycle with exceptional accuracy. While the exact synodic month lasts 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.8 seconds, Arnold & Son achieves such precision that a discrepancy of one day between the display and celestial reality would not occur for 122 years—provided the watch remains continuously wound.

Like all Arnold & Son movements, the A&S1612 calibre is developed, manufactured, decorated, assembled, adjusted and cased up entirely within the Manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Equipped with twin barrels and operating at a frequency of 3 Hz, it endows the Perpetual Moon 38 Red Gold “Year of the Horse” with a generous 90-hour power reserve.
