Kari Voutilainen: "When I was designing my in house caliber some years ago, there were already plans in my mind for future possibilities regarding complications and new features. The first question that came up\xa0 after\xa0 the\xa0 new\xa0 base\xa0 caliber\xa0 was\xa0 released\xa0 was simply:\xa0 what\xa0 should\xa0 be\xa0 the\xa0 next\xa0 development?\xa0 After discussions within the workshop together with my team, we decided that a power reserve indicator was a perfect first complication that was exactly in character with a manual winding wristwatch. The first step was to\xa0 define\xa0 the\xa0 characteristics we wanted to achieve.\xa0 I\xa0 felt\xa0 it was good at\xa0 this\xa0 point\xa0 to add a\xa0 hacking feature\xa0 for\xa0 the\xa0 seconds, and\xa0 to\xa0 design\xa0 the power reserve\xa0 in\xa0 an\xa0 unusual way so\xa0 that\xa0 it could\xa0 actually\xa0 be seen\xa0 by\xa0 the\xa0 user;\xa0 normally\xa0 this\xa0 is\xa0 impossible\xa0 to\xa0 see\xa0 inside\xa0 the\xa0 movement.\xa0 However,\xa0 there\xa0 was\xa0 one important aspect that I wanted to design which is harder to describe: the limiting of the power reserve to the period of the best torque of the mainspring.\tWhen\xa0 you\xa0 finish\xa0 winding\xa0 any\xa0 watch,\xa0 there\xa0 will\xa0 be\xa0 a\xa0 certain\xa0 amount\xa0 of\xa0 power\xa0 reserve\xa0 built\xa0 up\xa0 in\xa0 the mainspring.\xa0 However,\xa0 the\xa0 hours\xa0 at\xa0 the\xa0 end\xa0 of\xa0 the\xa0 reserve\xa0 period\xa0 will\xa0 not\xa0 be\xa0 optimal\xa0 for\xa0 the\xa0 best chronometric\xa0 results.\xa0 My\xa0 solution\xa0 is\xa0 taken\xa0 from\xa0 the\xa0 best\xa0 examples\xa0 from\xa0 the\xa0 past:\xa0 a\xa0 Maltese\xa0 cross construction on the winding barrel limits the power reserve to only supply slightly more than 2 days of optimal power out of 65 hours of torque to the movement.\tSo\xa0 said,\xa0 so\xa0 done, and\xa0 the new mechanical design was worked out,\xa0 requiring\xa0 the\xa0 production\xa0 of some 70 new movement parts. As a final flourish, new dial design was created for this timepiece, with framed sub- dials and a new guilloch pattern."
